Turning the Pages Project (Sultan Baybars' Qur'an) |
|
|
|
Sultan Baybars' Qur'an: Written in
gold in Arabic dates from 1304 to 1306 and was produced for the Mamluk ruler
of Egypt, Rukn al-Din Baybars al-Jashnagir. "Visitors are able to virtually
"turn" the pages of manuscripts in an incredibly realistic way, using
touch-screen technology and animation. They can zoom in on the high quality
digitised images and read or listen to notes explaining the beauty and
significance of each page. There are other features specific to the
individual manuscripts - in the Leonardo notebook, for example, a mirror
button turns the text round so visitors can try to read his famous mirror
handwriting.
There are currently nine treasures on display in Turning the Pages; the
Lindisfarne Gospels, the Diamond Sutra, the Sforza Hours, the Leonardo
Notebook, the Golden Haggadah, the Luttrell Psalter, Blackwell's Herbal, the
Sherborne Missal and Sultan Baybars' Qur'an." |

A Catalogue of Medieval Astronomical Instruments to ca. 1500 (by David A.
King) |
|
|
|
"A catalogue of medieval Islamic
and European astronomical instruments is currently being prepared at the
Institute for the History of Science at Frankfurt University. It is hoped
that this catalogue will serve as a useful research tool by providing
critical descriptions of all historically-significant instruments, arranged
according to provenance and type. The total number of instruments included
in the catalogue will be about 550 astrolabes (some 300 Islamic and 250
European) and 250 quadrants, sundials and other instruments." |

Dictionary of Islamic Philosophical Terms (www.muslimphilosophy.com) |
|
|
|
"This dictionary is an aid to the readers of Muslim
philosophical works many of which are in Arabic. It includes most of the
terminology that was developed by Muslim philosophers in their works and the
terms that they borrowed -and sometimes translated- from the Greek philosophical
works. Also included are concepts that are Islamic but of a philosophical nature
and were used by Muslim philosophers...The dictionary also includes the Arabized
names of the philosophers and scientist of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Origin
-namely those that worked with Greek works of science, mathematics and
philosophy....This dictionary is based on the work by Prof. M. Saeed Sheikh
"Dictionary of Muslim Philosophy" published by the Institute of Islamic
Culture of Lahore, Pakistan- first published in 1970 with updates and
corrections as needed...." |

A History of the Crusades (Kenneth M. Setton, Editor) (University of
Wisconsin, Madison) |
|
|
|
"The History of the Crusades,
published by the University of Wisconsin Press over a twenty year period
beginning in 1969, was intended to serve as a collaborative and comprehensive
treatment of the topic, ranging in time from the first 100 years of the
Crusades to their ultimate impact on the histories of the Near East and
Europe. The work is comprised of six volumes, each of which is included here
in its entirety.
It is hoped that the search features of the History of the Crusades database
will be a convenient aid to scholarship and study. Both the individual volumes
and the series as a whole can be browsed and searched by keyword. However, the
underlying computer text used in the search process consists of unedited files
created by using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. Consequently,
the search capability is useful but not absolutely reliable in locating words
and terms used in the texts. Users are advised to consult the table of
contents and indexes in the individual volumes in order to conduct a thorough
search for specific information in the texts." |

Complete 12 volume Jewish
Encyclopedia, originally published between 1901-1906. "The Jewish
Encyclopedia, which recently became part of the public domain, contains over
15,000 articles and illustrations. This online version contains the unedited
contents of the original encyclopedia. Since the original work was completed
almost 100 years ago, it does not cover a significant portion of modern Jewish
history (e.g., the creation of Israel, the Holocaust, etc.). However, it does
contain an incredible amount of information that is remarkably relevant today." |
